Frederick Douglass was a slave who chose to be free. As a teen man he was ignorant, felt oppressed, and lacked the ability to read or write. Once he was able to articulate himself, he chose to jaw his voice and demanded for his corrects. Few Americans have begun with so little and end up making such a remarkable difference. He is an example to us all.

As a young male child he is sent to Baltimore to remain with relatives of his master, Thomas Auld. His new mistress, Sophia Auld, began to get a line Douglass the A, B, Cs, and assisted Douglass in learning to spell haggling of three or four letters. This kind and tender-hearted woman instructs Douglass scorn her husband, who argued that educating slaves was unlawful. Though Mrs. Auld was not able to continue teach Douglass, she had given Douglass the determination to learn, and no precaution could prevent him from gaining the intimacy he desired.



Once Douglass acquired The Columbian Orator, the search for knowledge ends for him because he realized that the institution of slavery was wrong, and these words on the knave gave tongue to interesting thoughts of his own soul. Douglass realizes that the power of truth overpowers the sense of right and wrong of even a slaveholder. By studying this work, Frederick Douglass becomes convinced of the injustices of slavery, and the right for all people to be free. His actions and the actions of others resulted in the end of slavery.

Fredrick Douglass was a slave and like all other slaves had a fancy to be to free. He spent his entire life difficult to fulfill that dream.
