This novel was scripted a very long time ago when the N word was used on a daily basis. multitude routinely vocaled African Americans the N word back then, and blacks call/called themselves this term meaning no harm to each other. It is sightly like calling a Caucasian person a white boy or cracker. By retention the word in the novel, it will help the reader pick out exactly how language and slang were spoken in the time of writing. It shows contrast to our current culture. History cannot be re-written. Even though the word can mean harm, you cant mixture the way people spoke in another time. We should not cover up the fact that people used slang terms to describe others. If this book were to be banned, kids would be lacking out one of the greatest American novels of all time. To ban this book would be changing history.
This book should remain on the shelves because the N word is never used in a malicious way.
Mark Twain never meant to offend both group. Making fun of himself, Twain is known as a humorous writer. He wrote in a way that used normal slang from the time period. The character, Huck Finn, grows to respect his garter Jim. Twain shows he has no bias toward blacks.
Considering the authors intent, usage and the culture at the time it was written, the book should not be banned. The classic pokes fun at nearly everyone and is too good to censor in schools. The right to free lecturing is what makes us great. Ignorance is no excuse -- we should encourage everyone to learn almost our past culture.
