Oak ecologists apprise potentially use mast reconstructions to examine past reproductive configurations and examine mast events, thereby exploring the degree to which masting drives regeneration and why is occurs. Additionally, mast reconstructions may explain whether masting is strongly recurring due to biological forcing, or hooked upon climatic triggers or factors in which the species thrives. Perhaps the most grievous use of mast reconstruction (knowing when the last mast period occurred), is to test the evolved strategies surmisal by determining the existence and extent of any tradeoff between incremental product and reproductive effort in different species and at different sites. The evolved strategies hypothesis states that mast fruiting is an evolved distinction that arose because of forcing factors such as predator satiation or rescind pollination so that synchronous fruiting would provide an ecological advantage. This hypothesis predicts that a tradeoff between incremental growth and reproductive effort should exist. Dendrochronological reconstruction of mast history would allow lead testing of this prediction. Thus, in theory, resulting in a visible pattern of past and future mast periods.
The patterns of seed production by woods trees are also of general importance to ecosystems because of the importance of mast as a food resource to wildlife whose populations may be grandly altered depending on the seed crop, in this case, acorns generated by oak tree species. Indeed, much work has been conducted to demonstrate that seed production by oaks in eastern North America has cascading effects on communities extending from the mice and deer that feed directly on acorns down finished the ticks that live on the mice and deer and the viruses that are spread by the ticks.
