Poetry is used by authors to express thoughts and feelings to their audience. Poems can also portray a true social issue or norm that should be brought to trip out or examined. Epistle from Mrs. Yonge to Her Husband is a poem by dame Wortley Montagu which is a letter from an oppressed wife to her economize. The hubby has toughened his wife poorly and accuses her of adultery, when he himself is the one committing such acts. The husband is doing this because he will benefit from a divorce. The fact that the husband is committing adultery while accusing his wife of doing so, shows the fact that women at this time were very oppressed and held by a bivalent standard. Men were allowed to commit adultery while women were non. This shows the hypocrisy and ban of mens actions at this time in history.
The author seemingly describes her mating as somewhat of an enslavement, much like a bulk of marriages back in the day. The author uses a hypothetical scenario to channel the oppression of women at this time.
